FROM THE DESK
OF FR. LEN
Why does Fr. Len need to see those receiving
Confirmation almost every week after mass?
As part of the student’s preparation, our Youth Faith Formation program
makes every effort to engage the young people in learning more about their
faith in different and unique ways. For
the past two years, we used “liturgy papers” where the student was asked
questions about the homily, readings, and the church environment. This year we are trying something a little
different. Almost every week, the
students collect a signed copy of that week’s bulletin from me. When they attend their next class, a
question is asked about something found in the bulletin. The answer, which can be found in either the
bulletin proper or one of the inserts, pertains to some aspect of our faith or
that of the life of the parish.
Hopefully this process will enhance our youth, as well as their parents,
in their faith life.
Diocesan policy is that all priests are expected to
take three days off after the Christmas season. I will be away from this Monday to Thursday. Please be nice to Fr. Murphy and the staff
in my absence.

RECOGNITION CORNER
Special recognition and gratitude is given this week to all who came to help undecorate the church. We appreciate your assistance!
LITURGICAL SYMBOLISM
This
week’s liturgical symbol is the olive tree.
According to ancient laws, even warfare is not an excuse to chop down an olive tree. Human societies come and
go, olive trees live for centuries.
The 5% tithe of next
weekend’s collection will be sent to The Emmanuel Cancer Foundation in Scotch
Plains, which is a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to preserve the
quality of life for any New Jersey family with a child who has been diagnosed
with cancer. The distinctive feature of
this organization’s program is the tailored package of support provided at no
cost to the family. In addition to
financial assistance and counseling provided to families, staff and volunteers
serve the entire state by providing material assistance to families in crisis.
TABERNACLE LAMPS
Tabernacle lamps will be lit from
January 6-19th in
memory of Stefan Skalij requested by his wife, Katherine and family; for Health and Blessings for Frank Clark
requested by the Daily Mass Group; and
for Dorothy Bernotsky requested by the O’Sullivan Family.

This Sunday, January
14th, at the 9:30 a.m. Mass, we celebrate the “Rite of Welcome”
for Joley Tetreault and Joseph Konya.
They already share our Christian faith through baptism. Please give them your prayerful support as
they continue their journey.

Our next regular food
collection will take place next weekend, January 20/21. Our shelves are bare so any type of
nonperishable food items are welcome.
Hearty soups and canned meals would be especially useful if we have any
emergency needs. Please do not donate items beyond their
expiration date.

leaving the Church today the ministry featured this month in the space between
the two main doors. The Stewardship
Committee is featuring Vocations to the Priesthood and Religious Life. Take a few moments over the next couple of
weeks to check out the display.

interested in becoming a lector, training will be available. The youth meeting will follow Mass (7-8:30
p.m.) in the youth room.
MARK YOUR CALENDARS! March 3rd is the date of the
Diocesan Youth Day for high school-age teens.
What is your New Year’s
Resolution this year? How would you
like to make a difference in your life and the life of a child? There are over 11,200 children in foster care in New
Jersey. These children do not have the comfort of their mother to laugh over
triumphs and cry over hurts; children who do not have their father to teach
them to ride a bike. These children are
in need of loving, stable homes. Many
of them are innocent victims of abuse and neglect. Make a difference in the life of a child and become a resource
parent. It’s all about families. For more information call
1-866-247-HOME.
MUSIC
MINISTRY CONCERT
On Sunday, January 21st, at 3:30 p.m., Our
Lady of Lourdes Church will present its Music Ministry Concert. The concert will feature the Children’s,
Youth, and Adult choirs, Youth and Advanced Youth Handbell choirs, and various
instrumentalists. There will be a
free-will offering, and light refreshments served after the concert. For further information, call the parish
office.
The Rosary Altar Society,
the Social Concerns Respect Life Committee, and Our Lady of Lourdes Knights of
Columbus are running their annual charity drive for Life. The gift tags will be available January
20/21 in the narthex. Please bring
unwrapped gifts and donations back to Our Lady of Lourdes by January 28th. All gifts and donations will go to the local
pregnancy aid centers in our area. Any
questions, contact Bob Keeling at 908-236-9648, or e-mail him at bobkeelingfdd@earthlink.net.
